Water is a core building block of life on this planet. Fresh water (non-saline) is required for humans and most living organisms to survive. The human body is also composed of about 70% water. The surface oceans cover about 70% of earth’s surface. The total amount of water on Earth (fresh and saline) remains roughly the same, meaning the water you drink today is the exact same water that has been cycling through oceans, clouds, and land for over 4 billion years. Of all the water on the surface of the planet, 97% is salty ocean water; leaving 3% as fresh water. The fresh water is located in lakes, rivers, streams and subsurface aquifers or else locked into frozen systems of glaciers or permafrost.
A water molecule (H₂O) consists of one oxygen atom covalently bonded to two hydrogen atoms. It has a distinct "bent" shape with a bond angle of roughly 104.5°. Because oxygen attracts electrons more strongly than hydrogen, it is a highly polar molecule, granting it unique physical and chemical properties. Water (H2-O) is a unique, polar molecule essential for life. Because of its "bent" molecular shape and highly electronegative oxygen atom, it features a partially negative charge near the oxygen and partially positive charges near the hydrogens. This polarity creates extensive hydrogen bonds, giving water several anomalous and life-sustaining physical and chemical properties.
Key Physical & Chemical Properties:
Universal Solvent: Because water is polar, it can dissolve a wide range of ionic and polar substances. This allows it to transport vital nutrients and minerals in biological systems.
High Specific Heat Capacity: Water requires a significant amount of energy to change its temperature. This buffers Earth's climate and regulates the internal temperatures of living organisms.
Cohesion & Adhesion: Hydrogen bonds cause water molecules to stick together (cohesion) and to other surfaces (adhesion). This produces high surface tension and enables capillary action in plants.
Density Anomaly: Unlike most substances, water expands when it freezes because its hydrogen bonds form a crystalline structure. As a result, ice is less dense than liquid water and floats, preventing bodies of water from freezing solid.
Amphoteric Nature: Water is amphoteric, meaning it can act as both an acid (donating a proton) and a base (accepting a proton) in chemical reactions.
